Booking Genius and deals: what discounts you give, what requirements they set, how they stack and when they pay off
Genius gives its customers a 10 % discount in exchange for visibility; the Preferred Partner Programme costs more commission. Deals can add up to three discounts: how to stop them stacking.

Short answer: Genius is Booking's loyalty programme: if you join, you give at least a 10 % discount to the programme's customers (you pay for it) and in exchange you appear with the Genius label and more visibility. It requires three reviews and a score of 7.5 or more. The Preferred Partner Programme is not a discount, but more commission in exchange for a better position. Deals (mobile, by country, last-minute…) can stack up to three discounts on the same booking, so it is worth deciding in advance how much total discount you accept. It pays off if the increase in bookings covers the discount: measure it with the Genius report and not with impressions.
The visibility figures in this guide are the ones Booking publishes, stated by Booking; there is no independent data.
What is Genius for the property?
When you join, Booking automatically applies a 10 % discount to your cheapest unit and your best-selling one (if they are the same, only to that one). Optionally you can give bigger discounts to the programme's higher levels, 15 % (levels 2 and 3) and 20 % (level 3), or perks such as free breakfast or an upgrade. The discount is funded by you, not by Booking.
Genius customers see your Genius rate when they sign in and, as the flat is in the EMEA area (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), they can also see the 10 % without signing in. According to Booking, properties that join get on average 30 % more views in searches, 45 % more bookings and 40 % more revenue after deducting the cost of the discount (October 2026).
What requirements does Genius set?
- At least three guest reviews.
- A review score of at least 7.5 out of 10, weighted by how recent they are.
- The requirement on prices compared with other websites does not apply in the European Economic Area, so in Spain it does not count.
You have to keep meeting them to stay in. It is checked and activated in Boost performance → Genius partner programme → Try Genius now → Activate Genius.
Can it be paused or left?
Yes. In Deactivate discount you choose dates on the calendar (they do not have to be consecutive) and on those days your normal rates are shown:
| Discount | Days you can pause it |
|---|---|
| 10 % (levels 1, 2 and 3) | Up to 30 days |
| 15 % (levels 2 and 3) | 30 more days, only for the 15 % |
| 20 % (level 3) | 60 more days, only for the 15 % and the 20 % |
To leave: Manage your discount → Leave the Genius programme. It is immediate, but you may have to wait six months to rejoin.
To measure it, Your Genius report (in the same menu) separates bookings, nights and revenue from Genius and non-Genius customers, and compares average spend, cancellations, length of stay and booking window. It cannot be downloaded.
And the Preferred Partner Programme?
It is another programme: a better position in searches and a label in exchange for an increase in commission. Booking does not publish in its help pages how much it goes up; it says the total percentage can be checked in each programme's section, within Boost performance. According to Booking, preferred properties receive on average 65 % more views and 20 % more bookings.
| Preferred Partner Programme | Preferred Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Performance score | 70 % or more | 80 % or more |
| Review score | 7 or more | 8 or more |
| What Booking says | +65 % views, +20 % bookings | Could bring 30 % more bookings than being preferred |
Booking reviews the requirements every 90 days. You join and leave whenever you want, but if they take you out for not meeting them (or you leave after the warning), you wait 180 days. Separately there is Visibility Booster: you choose some dates, a customer country and how much extra commission you pay, for a one-off boost. These programmes explain why your invoice may have a higher commission than the one in the contract (Booking payouts and invoice).
What deals are there?
They are created in Promotions → Choose new promotion. Not all of them are available for all properties (October 2026):
| Deal | How it works |
|---|---|
| Basic deal | Flexible discount by date; the original price is shown crossed out |
| Last-minute | Booking recommends setting it at most 7 days before arrival |
| Early booker | Booking recommends a minimum of 30 days before arrival |
| Mobile rate | At least 10 % (Booking recommends 15 %), only in the app or in the app and mobile web |
| Country rate | From 5 %; the European Economic Area counts as a single market |
| New property deal | 20 % to the first guests, up to three bookings or 90 days |
| Limited-time deal | At least 30 %, 48 hours of extra visibility, once every two weeks and with a score of 7 or more (not for properties with a channel manager) |
| Campaigns | Getaway (stays from March to September), early year, late year (15 % or more) and Black Friday |
| Secret deal | Only for customers with an account or subscribed to the newsletter (not for properties with a channel manager) |
How do they stack and how do I stop them piling up?
The rules Booking publishes:
- You can add up to three discounts, and from each category only the biggest counts.
- Two products from the same category are not combined.
- The mobile rate and the country rate are added to Genius, the basic deal, the last-minute deal and the early booker deal, but never to each other or to Getaway, early year, late year, Black Friday or the limited-time deal.
- The New property deal is combined with the standard rate plan and specific rates.
- The Preferred Partner Programme is not a discount, so it does not stack with anything.
As not all customers see all discounts, the risk lies with the one who does combine three: for example, a Genius customer who books a last-minute deal from their mobile. To control it:
- Set a maximum total discount you accept and check which combinations exceed it.
- Limit the mobile rate and the country rate to specific rate plans and block dates (they can be blocked without limit).
- Use the Genius pause days on your strongest dates.
- If you use a channel manager, check in Account → Connectivity provider whether it has promotions enabled; if not, they are created in the extranet.
When do they pay off?
There is no single answer, but there are criteria:
- Do the sums with what you keep, not with the price: the discount is added to the commission and its VAT (what commission each platform charges).
- Season: on dates that fill up on their own, a discount can cut the price of bookings that would have come anyway; in the weak ones is where it makes most sense.
- New flat: without reviews you cannot join Genius; the New property deal helps you get the first ones.
- Measure before and after with the Genius report and Analytics, and compare the average price per night, not just the number of bookings.
- Think about leaving: leaving Genius can cost six months out, and an excluded preferred property waits 180 days.
How all this fits with your seasons is in prices and seasons.
What does a manager do with this?
They decide which programmes and deals to activate according to the season, make sure discounts do not stack up by accident and measure every month whether the volume makes up for it. At TGV we charge 15 % + VAT on what the owner is paid by the platforms, not counting cleaning, so we want the same as the owner: for each discount to bring in more than it costs.
